Chard School occupies a series of interesting Grade 2* Listed Buildings in the town's main street. Within its attractive grounds, there are a substantial number of other buildings behind those fronting the School, including the thatched Elizabethan Chapel, the gym and the purpose-built Millennium Science Lab.

The original Tudor building was built as a Manor House for the merchant, John Symes, in 1583. His descendants sold it to the Burgesses of Chard for the education of children in May 1671 and there has been a school on this site, continuously, since that time.

Throughout this non-selective school, the needs of the individual child are recognised and catered for by a team of enthusiastic and well-qualified teachers. Classes are intentionally small, with Infant and Junior classes having no more than 16 pupils, except in exceptional circumstances, and each with their own full and varied timetable. Particular emphasis is laid on the "3 Rs", which form the core of the curriculum. There is a separate class for every school year (Years 1-6).

Although the stress is on Maths and English, all subjects benefit from specialist subject teachers and facilities to match. The school follows the National Curriculum for both Key Stages 1 and 2, with testing being undertaken annually. The percentage of children who reach Level 4 is far higher than the local or national averages.

To reach these standards, the School has an extensive academic programme, supplemented by a wide range of cultural, aesthetic and sporting opportunities, both in the timetabled and the extended curriculum.
